Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas has said she’s terrified to leave the house after Katya Jones is said to have caught coronavirus at a sandwich shop.

Yesterday it was confirmed the professional dancer and Nicola Adams, Strictly’s first same-sex partnership, were forced to leave the contest after Katya tested positive for Covid.

Adding to Strictly’s woes, Motsi Mabuse made a dash to Germany for an ‘urgent reason’ and will subsequently be unable to join her fellow judges Shirley and Craig Revel Horwood in the Strictly studio on Saturday night as she’s required to isolate for 14 days.

Shirley admitted she was anxious to leave the house during an appearance on TalkRadio.

’We go shopping, touch something, it’s on a box, not even necessarily at the BBC. It could be anywhere out there,’ she said.

‘I’m so nervous to go out the front door in case I absolutely have to. So vigilance  and hoping you’re not one of the ones who get it.’

Shirley added that she was ‘gutted’ to see Nicola and Katya out of the competition in such catastrophic circumstances.

‘It’s historic, this partnership,’ she cried. ‘It was doing so well, and of course we wish them a speedy recovery and that Katya gets better.

‘It’s too hard to call who could win, but certainly with the dances they had they were going to go far, in my estimation.

‘It was just a fantastic team and partnership and they brought light every week. It was fabulous. We wish them both well.’

Nicola revealed she was ‘devastated’ at the way she had left the series – after being tipped to win the show.

‘Hey guys! I’m absolutely devastated my Strictly journey has come to an end so soon. ‘I had so much more to give and so many people to win this for!’ she tweeted.

‘But I just want to say a huge thank you to Katya for being the best dance partner anyone could ask for. She pushed me way out of my comfort zone and it’s been an incredible experience.’

Katya also addressed the news in a statement, heaping praise on her dance partner for her energy over the last few weeks.

‘Dancing with Nicola has been an absolute inspiration. She’s given her all each and every week and we were so excited to create more dances in the competition,’ she said.

‘Of course, I’m devastated to leave this way but I’ve made a friend for life and loved every moment of this special journey. I’d like to wish good luck to all the remaining couples!’

Strictly Come Dancing continues tomorrow night at 7.10pm on BBC One.
