Adam Peaty has addressed his mum’s claim that his elimination from Strictly Come Dancing 2021 was a ‘total fix’, explaining that she just wanted to see him perform one dance in particular.
On Sunday evening, Adam and his professional dance partner Katya Jones became the latest couple to be sent home on Strictly after losing out to Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin in the dance-off.
After the results show, the Olympian’s mum, Caroline Peaty, tweeted that she was proud of her son, adding: ‘Total fix and I’m not buying the public vote.’
Following the BBC’s denial of Strictly being fixed, Adam appeared on Thursday’s BBC Breakfast to speak about his exit and his mum’s reaction.
The swimmer told presenter Charlie Stayt that ‘mums are always going to support their own’, saying: ‘She wanted to see me every Saturday night – you know how mums get, bless her.
‘I love her to bits, she loves me to bits. I think she just wanted me to do a Paso [Doble], that’s all she wanted to see me do… for me, if anyone can lose well it’s me, and everyone in that competition, they are incredible people, and I’m glad I’m out because I don’t deserve to be there.’
Adam showered the dancers on Strictly with praise, saying that he ‘will always get behind everyone on the show’.
When asked by co-host Naga Munchetty if he ‘had words’ with his mother, Adam explained that he didn’t want anyone to be ‘censored’.
‘Well, yeah… but you know, again, it is the way it is, isn’t it? I don’t want to censor anyone… she’s got her thoughts and I’ve got mine, and my thought is the most important one to me, is that I had the most incredible time and everyone on that show deserves to be there,’ he said.
Before their elimination, Adam and Katya told Metro.co.uk how excited they were about the prospect of doing a Paso Doble if they made it through.
The athlete said that it’s ‘one of my favourite dances when I’ve ever seen dancing’, saying that it’s the ‘one dance I’d love to do’ as he outlined how he ‘finds energy in power’.
The pair also said that they were planning on pulling exciting tricks out of the bag for their Couple’s Choice routine, which they would have performed this Saturday if they hadn’t been voted out.
Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
