BBC stars including Carol Kirkwood and Louise Minchin have celebrated Dan Walker joining the cast of Strictly Come Dancing 2021.

Today, two more stars for the upcoming series of Strictly have been announced, with BBC Breakfast presenter Dan and former Coronation Street star Katie McGlynn being confirmed in this year’s line-up.

Dan, 44, said that while he was ‘definitely excited’ to take on the challenge, he was admittedly ‘a little bit worried, mostly terrified and a small part of me is considering going into hiding’.

Following the former Football Focus host’s big Strictly reveal, which he confessed he was encouraged to sign up for by his children, several of his BBC colleagues wished him luck on his glitzy journey.

Weather presenter Carol was ecstatic over the news, tweeting several celebratory emojis, including dancing men and clapping hands.

Louise, who revealed on today’s BBC Breakfast that Dan hadn’t told her he was going to be on Strictly, wrote: ‘What a rascal, I cannot believe @mrdanwalker kept this from me!! Good luck Dan, I will be watching.’

Samantha Quek, who presented alongside Dan for the BBC’s Olympics Breakfast show, wrote: ‘Yes @mrdanwalker I expect some quality moves as you go up to the Parisian-easel in 2024! Good luck.’

Sports presenter Mike Bushell, who competed on Strictly in 2019, shared a video of himself performing a Charleston dance move in the woods, writing: ‘Yes yes yes. The famous wingspan (like an albatross) is coming to the @bbcstrictly dance floor.

‘@BBCBreakfast @mrdanwalker you will smash it and love every second and I’m sure like me will still be doing your best dog interfered with Charleston on a morning walk in years to come.’

BBC Sport presenter Kelly Somers also shared her excitement over the news, writing: ‘Oh MY this is incredible! I’m so excited for this Dan!’

After making his announcement on BBC Breakfast, Dan shared a tweet saying that he had returned to his phone ‘to about a gazillion messages’.

‘Genuinely terrified but also looking forward to it,’ he said as he prepares to step onto the Strictly dancefloor.

‘The campaign to represent #TeamGB in breakdancing at #Paris2024 starts here,’ he added. We’ll see about that!

Other stars confirmed for this year’s Strictly so far include McFly musician Tom Fletcher, Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies and TV presenter AJ Odudu.

They will also be competing against Great British Bake Off winner John Whaite, Peep Show star Robert Webb and CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson.

Strictly Come Dancing will air later this year on BBC One.
