Strictly Come Dancing 2021 star Dan Walker has revealed the toll that practise has had on him, admitting that his partner Nadiya Bychkova’s gruelling training ‘broke’ him one day ahead of their first routine.
Earlier this week, Dan confirmed that he was back at training after a short break following a head injury that required assessment in hospital.
The BBC Breakfast presenter had walked straight into a glass door, reassuring his fans that everything was ok after going for a head scan in A&E.
Now that he’s back in the dance studio, Dan is having to get back up to speed in preparation for Saturday evening, when he and Nadiya will perform a Quickstep for their first dance in the ballroom.
The 44-year-old offered a glimpse at just how tough training is in a social media post, sharing a picture of himself lying flat on the floor with his hands resting on his stomach.
‘She actually broke me yesterday,’ he wrote in the caption, alongside cry-laughing and sleeping emojis.
‘I got down there to stretch and I was long gone. 3am starts got me in the end.’
Dan added the hashtags ‘#ShortSocksSMartShoesForTheWin’ – in reference to his training attire – as well as a nickname for his partnership with Nadiya, ‘#TeamWalkova’.
In the comment section of the Instagram post, Nadiya wrote that it was the ‘sweetest thing’ when Dan lay down for his rest.
‘Partner,’ she wrote, along with the emoji of the monkey covering their eyes.
‘That was the sweetest thing, I was still talking to you, but you were gone. Great chat,’ she joked.
‘You are absolutely amazing partner, not sure I ever saw anyone in my life working as hard as you do. Grateful to have you as my partner! #TeamWalkova.’
One of Dan’s Instagram followers remarked that he looked ‘shattered’, while another wrote: ‘You poor thing it’ll be worth it though.’
In a recent training update, Dan shared a video of himself and Nadiya in the dance studio, showing off the nasty bruise on his head from his accident.
Dan is up against tough competition on this year’s series of Strictly, facing off with celebrities including Olympian Adam Peaty, Loose Women star Judi Love, TV presenter AJ Odudu and McFly musician Tom Fletcher.
Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
