Strictly Come Dancing star Giovanni Pernice is to use a sign language interpreter on tour after his 2021 win with Rose Ayling-Ellis, who was the first Deaf contestant and victor on the series.
On Saturday night, the pair were overjoyed as they lifted the Glitterball Trophy, with John Whaite and Johannes Radebe finishing as runners up.
Following their victory, it’s been revealed that Rose’s influence has sparked a huge surge in people applying to learn sign language.
The EastEnders actor and the pro celebrated the Deaf community on several occasions in their performances, such as by incorporating sign language into their routines and having one of their dances feature a moment of silence that reduced viewers to tears.
Next year, Giovanni is set to go on tour, performing in several locations across the UK.
In an announcement made on Instagram, dance production company Strictly Theatre Co revealed that three of his performances will feature a sign language interpreter.
In the caption, the company wrote: ‘We are delighted to make this announcement… @pernicegiovann1 A massive thank you to @becktheatre @bridgewaterhall & Glasgow Concert Hall for making this possible!’
The picture to accompany the post outlined that the interpreter will be visible to audiences on the left hand side of the stage.
Several Instagram users applauded the move, with one writing: ‘I’m cheering this! Fantastic.’
‘I’m not crying. A bit of glitter got in my eye,’ another commented.
Someone else showered Giovanni with praise, stating: ‘Wow @pernicegiovann1 we shouldn’t have expected anything less.’
Commending his partnership with Rose, another said: ‘You are an incredible man. The way you took care of Rose,t he wonderful time you gave her and helping giving her a voice, nothing but beauty two fold.’
After their win, Rose shared a heartfelt post on Instagram dedicated to Giovanni, describing him as the ‘most wonderful human ever’.
‘I’m dedicating this post to the most wonderful human ever, Giovanni. The person who was there everyday with me for four months, who knows truly what this journey has been for me, the reason why I have become confident within myself,’ she said.
‘He came into my world and brought the best out of me. I cannot thank him enough for all the work and effort to make me become the dancer that I am today. Winning the Glitterball is the best gift I could ever give to Giovanni because he really deserves it.’
