Strictly Come Dancing 2021: John Whaite in tears during clash with Johannes Radebe in training

John Whaite and Johannes Radebe may be regarded as one of the strongest pairings on Strictly Come Dancing 2021, but the Great British Bake Off star has revealed that a brief tiff in training left him in tears.

On Saturday evening, it was finally announced that John had been partnered with Johannes for the new series of Strictly, making history as the first ever all-male couple on the BBC programme.

Their first dance will be a Tango to Blue Monday, with the pair working hard behind-the-scenes to ensure they’ve nailed each step before they take to the dancefloor in a bid to impress the judges and the nation.

On Tuesday, John and Johannes took part in their first interview since being paired up on Steph’s Packed Lunch, updating host Steph McGovern on how their training is going.

While it’s evident they’re getting along swimmingly, John admitted that they have had small disagreements in the dance studio.

He explained that on one occasion, Johannes was simply being ‘too nice’, as he tried to push the dancer to be ‘horrible’ to him.

‘He was being too nice. I said, “Johannes, I’m just not getting it so please can you talk me through the steps, be horrible to me and I’ll get it.” He was like, “No darling, I don’t do that.” I started crying…,’ he said.

Fortunately, after taking some time to calm down with his partner Paul Atkins, John returned to Johannes, who leant a shoulder to cry on.

Despite the odd moment of stress, John said he’s ‘living his best life’ on Strictly and ‘loving every minute’.

When asked what John is like to work with, Johannes delivered a heartfelt answer, responding: ‘He’s been lovely to work with and I mean that with everything in me.

‘John has got a discipline that’s unquestionable, he goes to the gym in the mornings so by the time he turns up he’s all warmed up and ready to go and I can’t tell you what that makes me feel like. Every day I go home and I’m like, I’m a lucky human.’

John and Johannes’ training schedule definitely sounds gruelling, rehearsing every day from 10am to around 7pm to 8pm in the evening.

‘Sometimes the days are stressful and we have to take a few more breaks,’ the celebrity baker said.

‘Last week when we were learning the steps, I was getting really stressed… I glaze over. I reach mental saturation and he has to either feed me Haribo or send me home and I think it’s easier just to put me in a cab and send me home.’

Strictly Come Dancing returns this Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
