Strictly Come Dancing 2021: Rose Ayling-Ellis clarifies savage ‘smelly breath’ comment about Giovanni Pernice

Strictly Come Dancing 2021 star Rose Ayling-Ellis has clarified the comment that she made about Giovanni Pernice’s ‘smelly breath’ as the pair prepare to compete in the final.

Last Saturday, the couple wowed the judges and viewers at home with two stunning performances in the semi-final, beginning with a Waltz before amping up the drama with an Argentine Tango.

Ahead of their second routine, Rose explained to Claudia Winkleman how dancing so close to Giovanni would mean that she’d have to endure his ‘smelly breath’ – although she’s now insisted that he’s not the only one.

While speaking on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC radio 2 on Wednesday, the EastEnders actor opened up about the moment, explaining that in the rehearsal room, ‘we don’t always have mints’, adding: ‘I eat a lot and it’s eight hours a day so… the breath gets a bit, sort of, warm.’

Giovanni then piped in, stating: ‘Just to clarify, it’s not only me having a smelly breath.’

‘No it’s not just you, I also get smelly breath too,’ Rose replied to the professional dancer.

Giovanni continued, saying that it’s ‘ok’ to have smelly breath because the Argentine Tango is ‘a passionate dance’.

‘We have smelly breath together,’ his partner added. Aren’t these two just the sweetest?!

Smelly breath or not, the pair rocked their semi-final routines, scoring 39 for their Waltz and a perfect score of 40 for their Argentine Tango.

In the end, Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu landed in the bottom two with John Whaite and Johannes Radebe, with the judges voting unanimously to save the latter pair.

Just days before the final, it’s been reported that AJ Odudu has suffered a foot injury that means she’s having to walk on crutches and had to have an emergency scan.

‘This is the worst possible timing but AJ is a real trooper and will keep going no matter what. The pain in her foot was terrible,’ a source said, according to The Mirror.

In the final, the couples are due to perform three dances each.

One will be a past performance of their own choice, while another will be a previous routine selected by the judges.

Their third dance will be their unique showdances, which will showcase their strengths as they strive to win the public vote.

The Strictly Come Dancing final airs this Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
