Strictly Come Dancing star Rose Ayling-Ellis has credited Disney’s film Mulan as a big ‘inspiration’, however, several years later, she now sees the story in a different way.

The 26-year-old actress revealed she watched the animated musical many times when she was younger, and recalled how she used to tune into the motion picture without subtitles.

The 1998 animation movie tells the story of a fearless young girl who disguises herself as a man, so she can fight northern invaders in China.

‘When I was little I used to watch it with no subtitles, and I understood the storyline in a completely different way to what actually happens,’ Rose told The Sun.

The Eastenders star, who is Strictly’s first-ever deaf contestant, emphasised how ‘disappointed’ she was after watching the action tale again with the additional text, and even claimed her initial ‘version was so much better.’

Rose, who is partnered up with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, danced an emotive couple’s choice to the song ‘Symphony’ by Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson.

Halfway through their performance, the music was muffled and turned down to silence as the pair carried on dancing.

Head judge Shirley Ballas said: ‘This is a number that will be etched in my heart for a long time. It was absolutely beautiful.

‘I’m sure the deaf community will be absolutely so proud of you.’

They were awarded 39 out of 40, a near-perfect score.

The duo will be performing a quickstep to Love Is An Open Door, inspired by another Disney classic, Frozen, in Saturday’s musical-themed special.

Strictly Come Dancing returns this Saturday at 6.35pm on BBC One.
