Strictly Come Dancing star Rose Ayling-Ellis was left floored when she found out how much searches for sign language surged after her beautiful performance with Giovanni Pernice on Saturday night, which was lauded by fans.
During the latest episode of the BBC competition, the couple took to the dancefloor to perform a Viennese Waltz that sizzled with emotion, earning an incredible score of 37 out of a possible 40 from the judges.
Fans raved over the use of British Sign Language (BSL) in the routine, which saw Rose and Giovanni sign each other at the beginning of the performance as they acted out the scenario of their characters for the dance having an argument.
During Wednesday’s It Takes Two, host Janette Manrara told the pair that she had ‘goosebumps’ watching their dance, asking Rose how it felt to use sign language as part of the choreography.
‘I just love to show my language and to incorporate it into the dance, I think it’s very special for me,’ the EastEnders actor said.
‘It’s down to Giovanni, he’s the one who came up with the idea, I didn’t think of it.’
When asked how the idea came to him, Giovanni explained that he and Rose had been ‘talking a lot’ about the fact that Rose is deaf, saying that he believed that it was the ‘right time’ to bring sign language into the choreography.
Speaking about its inclusion in their performance, he said: ‘Obviously we have an argument at the beginning, the story was having an argument, but I need to make it real, so obviously I need to have an argument the real way. I asked if I had permission to do something like this in a dance, and she said yes.’
Not only were Strictly viewers left stunned by Rose and Giovanni’s performance while commending the inclusion of BSL in their dance, but their routine also sparked a huge increase in online searches about sign language.
According to Janette, it was reported that searches for sign language increased by 488% as a result, leaving Rose gobsmacked.
‘That’s the whole point why I’m on this show! Hopefully they will actually learn to sign,’ Rose exclaimed excitedly.
For Halloween Week coming up on Saturday, Rose and Giovanni are set to bring even more drama as they dance a Tango to Shivers by Ed Sheeran.
Rose teased that she’ll be the one in control on the dancefloor… and we can’t wait to see what spectacular moves this stellar pair have up their sleeves.
It Takes Two returns tomorrow at 6.30pm on BBC Two.
