Strictly Come Dancing 2022: Martin Roberts has literally been calling bosses to join line-up

Martin Roberts isn’t even shy to admit he’s been calling Strictly Come Dancing producers desperately asking for a spot on the 2022 line-up.

Last month the Homes Under The Hammer presenter was one of the brave stars who stripped completely naked and bared all for ITV’s Strictly The Real Full Monty, raising awareness for cancer charities, inspired by the BBC contest which saw Rose Ayling-Ellis lift the Glitterball trophy in 2021.

After his experience on Ashley Banjo’s annual striptease fundraiser alongside the likes of Blue’s Duncan James and Christine McGuinness, Martin said he was gagging to take to the dancefloor for Strictly 2022.

‘I was actually asking the people at Strictly if there’s any chance they might actually take a phone call from me this year,’ he said.

‘I’ve ended up doing Strictly The Real Full Monty which wasn’t quite what I was anticipating, but, actually that’s been just incredible and is something I’m so proud to have done.’

However, he also admitted his appearance on Strictly The Real Full Monty could have scuppered his chances of taking part in the BBC rival.

‘I mean, hopefully it shows I can dance,’ he continued to Express.co.uk.

‘Whether or not it’s a nail in the coffin for my chances on Strictly I don’t know.

‘It might be the opposite. Maybe they’ll go “Actually, you know what he’s a good sport, he gives it his all and actually he can dance.”’

Martin dedicated his appearance on Strictly: The Full Monty to his best friend and colleague Dave, who died from bowel cancer.

‘I know he’d be laughing his socks off at the prospect,’ he said.

‘He’d also know what a huge thing this is for me. I’m not body confident. I was badly bullied for being fat as a child, and those insecurities are hard to dislodge.

‘I’ve happily managed 35 years on TV without revealing any part of my private anatomy, so the idea of getting stark naked in front of millions of TV viewers and a 3,000-strong audience fills me with utter horror.’

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year.
