Mel Giedroyc was cutting some serious shapes during the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special, and TV bosses are reportedly eyeing her up for next year.
The former Great British Bake Off host, 53, and professional dancer Neil Jones, 39, impressed the judges and viewers at home with their Couples Choice to Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice Baby, however singer Anne-Marie was the one who lifted the coveted Glitterball.
Strictly 2021 has officially wrapped, however, according to The Sun, there could be a space in the 2022 line-up with Mel’s name on it.
‘They saw how popular she was and her performance surprised everyone,’ a source said.
‘They’ve tried to get her to sign up before but really want her for next year’s show.’
The dancing duo certainly looked the part as they sported a cool retro look in reference to the song title, and even scored four 10s from Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke.
Following her brief appearance on the annual special, which also featured Fred Sirieix, Jay Blades and Adrian Chiles, it looks like the comedian wouldn’t turn down the opportunity if it were to arise.
‘I’ve always thought Strictly’s a weird one for a woman in her 50s because you’re too old to be a contender,’ she told The Telegraph.
‘Unless you’re Debbie McGee, so it’s best to wait until you can do an [Ann] Widdecombe.’
‘But now I’ve dipped my large, middle-aged toe into the glitter, and maybe I feel differently,’ she added.
Fans that can’t get enough of Strictly have next year’s tour to look forward to, which is scheduled to begin on January 20, 2022, in Birmingham.
There will be 33 shows in venues up and down the country.
Cities lucky enough to experience the spectacle include Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Glasgow, Nottingham and London.
Strictly Come Dancing is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
