Strictly Come Dancing fans desperately hope AJ Odudu will perform showdance in 2022 series after pulling out of live tour

Strictly Come Dancing fans have expressed their desperate hope that AJ Odudu will feature in the 2022 series to perform her showdance with Kai Widdrington after dropping out of the live tour due to her injury.

The upcoming nationwide tour was due to see the return of the TV presenter and her professional dance partner after they were forced to withdraw from the 2021 series ahead of the final.

AJ sustained a serious foot injury during training, tearing a ligament in her right ankle and undergoing various medical treatments with the hope of being able to compete for the Glitterball Trophy against John Whaite, Johannes Radebe and the eventual winners Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice.

While it was initially announced that she and Kai would perform the showdance they had planned for the final on the live tour, it has since been revealed that EastEnders actor Maisie Smith will be taking her place.

AJ’s fans shared their disappointment over her missing out on the tour, expressing their hope that she makes a speedy recovery as her foot continues to heal.

Looking forward to the launch of the next season of Strictly, several also speculated that AJ and Kai could take to the ballroom with their showdance routine to open the 2022 series.

‘I hope we all get to see your show dance eventually… perhaps on the opening episode of Strictly 2022. Wishing you a full recovery,’ one person tweeted.

‘Much love! Hopefully you and Kai can return for the opening show later this year and blow us all away with the showdance,’ someone else commented.

Another Strictly fan wrote: ‘Maybe we could convince @bbcstrictly to let you two dance on the 2022 season opener so we get to see you guys do your showdance, or even just a favourite.’

When AJ announced that she wouldn’t be able to do the live tour, she revealed that the decision was made after ‘medical advice’.

‘I had hoped for one last dance with @kaiwidd & we were both so looking forward to finally showing you our (unseen) show dance, but it turns out I can’t go straight from wearing a medical moonboot to performing in 37 shows in 3 inch heels. Who knew?!’ she wrote in her caption on social media.

‘The good news is, Kai and the rest of my Strictly fam will be setting the stage on fire and and I can’t wait to go cheer them all on.’

When recently asked about the prospect of AJ and Kai returning to the 2022 series for their showdance, BBC declined to comment.

Several Strictly stars offered her support, including Janette Manrara, who wrote: ‘All my love @ajodudu. We will miss you shining on that stage, but your getting better ASAP is of utmost priority.’

Great British Bake Off star John added: ‘NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Heartbroken for you and for all of us.’

Strictly Come Dancing is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
