Strictly Come Dancing: Oti Mabuse admits she wasn’t sure Bill Bailey would take show ‘seriously’ when they were partnered up

Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Oti Mabuse has confessed she wasn’t sure how ‘seriously’ comedian Bill Bailey would take the show when they were first partnered up, although she has since learned how much of a ‘hard worker’ he truly is.

On Saturday evening, Oti and Bill astounded audiences across the UK when they achieved their first 10 of the series from Shirley Ballas for their Couple’s Choice street dance to Rapper’s Delight.

While the pairing have become firm favourites among Strictly fans, with judge Craig Revel Horwood expressing his hope that they’ll reach the final of the competition, Oti has revealed she wasn’t certain what Bill would bring to the dance floor when he was announced as her partner.

On Thursday morning, Oti and Bill spoke to This Morning’s Phillip Schofield and his temporary co-host Davina McCall about their experience on the show.

Phillip stated that because Bill is ‘such a funny guy’, people may have initially thought he would be the ‘comedy act’ of the competition.

‘That’s usually what happens on the show. I didn’t know if he was going to take it seriously or not,’ Oti said.

However, whoever she was partnered up with, Oti was going to make them word hard no matter what, she said.

‘I knew that if they were going to partner him with me, he didn’t have a choice [to take it seriously],’ she stated.

‘Bill is a hard worker and the producers knew that. I consider myself quite serious when I choreograph and I wanted to give him that respect. I hope I did that every week by pushing him.’

Oti and Bill also revealed that while their Couple’s Choice dance was a hit, rehearsals for the routine didn’t go quite so smoothly.

‘That routine, honestly, only worked that one time on live TV,’ Oti said.

‘He was struggling the whole day, from Friday to Saturday, even the dress run,’ she recalled, saying she was ‘so proud and shocked’ when head judge Shirley awarded them a 10.

‘We were overcome with relief more than anything else,’ Bill added.

‘In the dress run, I had the newspaper round the wrong way, I put my hat on sideways, I got a couple of steps wrong, dropped the phone. Oti’s looking at me going, what is this? What was all that training for?’

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday evening at 7.15pm on BBC One.
