Strictly Come Dancing’s Aljaz Skorjanec was ‘struggling’ with work burnout

Strictly Come Dancing’s Aljaz Skorjanec has revealed he was ‘struggling’ with work burnout after a demanding schedule in 2019, saying he was forced to turn his phone off for a whole month.

The 30-year-old dancer spoke about his challenging year, in which he had just ‘seven or eight days off’.

Speaking on the Power of 10 podcast with Graham Bell, Aljaz said that he cut himself off from the world when he and his wife Janette Manrara lost work due to the pandemic.

He said: ‘In 2019 I had one week off and it was broken up into days. I literally had seven or eight days off in the whole year.

‘I was really struggling at the end of 2019. So when our tour in 2020 got cancelled I just said, “I’m going to take this opportunity and do nothing.”’

Aljaz added: ‘So I switched off my phone for a month. I really switched off mentally and physically. The only thing I would do is go for a walk just to get some air.’

He added: ‘Janette and I stayed in this flat for months. We have lived together for 10 years but we’ve always worked as well.

‘So it was interesting to learn the dynamics of the two of us being at home but not doing much.’

Aljaz and Janette were forced to spend time apart during filming on Strictly Come Dancing, and they were only reunited after the competition came to a close.

Aljaž previously said that spending time apart was a ‘small sacrifice’ to make for Strictly.

‘I think it’s a small sacrifice that most of us pros had to make,’ he insisted. ‘Some have kids they’re not going to see for a while.

‘We’ve been together for over 10 years and as she would say, sometimes it’s good not to see each other for a while.’

Strictly Come Dancing is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
