Strictly Come Dancing star Nicola Adams has her eyes on the prize for this year’s competition – and is working through her birthday to make sure she gets there.

The Olympian is turning 38 today, and it making sure it’s put to good use by returning to the rehearsal studio with Katya Jones.

Taking to Instagram, she declared: ‘It’s my birthday, and of course, I’m still learning my dance! Proper professional.’

We admire the self control, Nicola, as we would definitely be eating our body weight in cake by now.

Nicola and Katya made Strictly history on Saturday night by becoming the first official same-sex couple in the competition, and viewers were loving it.

Performing a quickstep to Get Happy by Ella Fitzgerald, the pair earned 21 points, tying in third place with Caroline Quentin and Johannes Radebe, and Ranvir Singh and Giovanni Pernice.

But no one seemed to love it more than Nicola, who finished her routine by yelling proudly live on air: ‘I’m a dancer, baby!!’

She later shared the routine online and thanked fans as she said: ‘Last night was unbelievable, I never thought I would enjoy dancing as much as I am.

‘I was sooooo happy and excited last night dancing with [Katya Jones] Thank you everyone for your support and your messages!

‘We’ll be working hard next week on the new dance, can’t wait for you to see it! I’m a dancer baby!’

The duo now have to put the work in to earn their place in the competition, with the first eliminations taking place next week.

While we don’t know their dance routine just yet, the pair will have to impress the judges to keep the leg up in the competition, and win over the viewers at home.

Currently, Jacqui Smith and Anton Du Beke are at the bottom of the leaderboard, with viewers voting that they are the most likely to be sent home.

But with the first week throwing up so many surprises, it’s still anyone’s game.

Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturday at 7.25pm on BBC One.
