JJ Chalmers has revealed that Prince Harry may be watching Strictly Come Dancing this year to see how he gets on.

The Marine and Invictus medallist, who suffered serious injuries in 2011 when an IED (improvised explosive device) exploded near him in Afghanistan, will be taking part in this year’s show.

Appearing on The One Show on Friday, JJ was asked whether Prince Harry had been in touch with him since he was announced for the show.

He revealed: ‘Yeah, so I have heard back from him and like all my friends from the military, he thinks first and foremost that it is absolutely ridiculous of course, and it’s hilarious.

‘But at the same time, the Invictus Games was founded to give opportunities not just for us to recover physically – which obviously this is a physical test – but actually to have a life beyond injury and beyond our recovery.

‘So he’s incredibly proud of anybody who goes on to succeed in whatever chosen field they are in and this is just a progression in my career and I think he will be looking on with pride.’

Somewhere in sunny Los Angeles, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might just be spending their Saturday nights watching JJ whirl around the dancefloor by the sounds of it.

JJ previously revealed what happened when he was touring a suspected bomb factory in Afghanistan.

He explained: ‘Unfortunately, one of my friends stepped on one of these devices, the blast went off underneath his feet, and all the rubbish that gets thrown off of these IEDs are buried in the ground, just came my way and it just pulverised my body.

‘My arms essentially came off, and they were stuck back on by incredible surgeons in the coming weeks, and months, and years, for that matter.

‘My face was crushed, my neck was broken, my eardrums were burst. Pretty much everything had had some level of damage. But, except for a couple of fingers, everything was still there.

‘It was all stuck back together, the surgeon built me a new body. And then I spent the best part of four or five years learning how to use that body.  And here we are now, we’re going to find out if it’s fixed or not, essentially.’

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
