Brian Cox has pondered on his final minutes on Succession, acknowledging that he has yet to see Logan Roy’s death.
During the season four episode titled Connor’s Wedding, viewers were taken aback when the patriarch and Waystar Royco CEO abruptly died while on a private flight, leaving his loved ones in shock.
The subsequent episodes saw his children, Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Kendall (Jeremy Strong), compete for control of the corporation before that shocking final vote put it firmly in the hands of Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard).
While we were all engrossed in the drama, Brian stated that he had yet to sit down and analyse his final minutes on film.
Emily Blunt told Variety’s Actors on Actors series that the terrible death “blew her hair back.”
‘I actually pretend that he’s not dead, that he just disappeared,’ he replied. ‘I never watched that, by the way. I haven’t seen that episode. I don’t see very many of them, to be honest with you.
‘It’s bad enough doing it, without having to watch it.’
When asked whether he didn’t like watching himself back because he’s ‘self-critical’ or simply ‘bored’, Brian confessed: ‘Bored. Bored.
‘I prefer the doing of it. Because once you’ve done it, it’s up to the audience to make their decision. And especially playing somebody like Logan; he’s so misunderstood. They just see this anger and rage.’
Unpacking Logan’s nasty remark to his children that they are “not serious people,” Brian offered his own version of what the media tycoon was going at.
‘Well, he means they’re not serious people. That they’re so keen on success, keen on all the elements that are not rooted in anything. They’ve never learned how to deal with their entitlement,’ he added. ‘Unfortunately, I’ve played a lot of very not pleasant people. I don’t know why. I think I’m perfectly pleasant.’
The critically acclaimed series came to an end last month with a last meeting of the Waystar Royco board, which opted to sell the firm to Lukas.
Kendall was devastated by the choice and his brothers’ last-minute treachery, and was seen gathering his thoughts on a bench overlooking the sea as the credits played.
Speaking about the moving shoot, Jeremy said that there was additional material that wasn’t included in the final cut.
Appearing on the official Succession podcast, he recalled: ‘I looked at these waves. And it was so windy that day, and so cold. And there was some piece of metal clanging and it was this terrible sound. And I couldn’t bear it.
‘I stood up and walked slowly to the barrier that was set up there and climbed over it. And I didn’t really know what I plan to do. And the actor playing Colin saw me and ran and stopped me from doing it.
‘In a way I think you see the intentionality in the character. I mean, you said you felt like he was going to go in…
‘And I did. I tried to. It’s a completely tragic ending, from my perspective. I think that Jesse maybe intended that in the writing, this sense that Kendall has lost, but maybe he’s free.
‘And maybe he’s going to keep walking. I guess I felt with everything in my body that there is no coming back from this.’
