Susanna celebrated GMB’s success months after Piers’ departure (Picture: ITV)
Susanna Reid has celebrated a significant boost to Good Morning Britain’s ratings following Piers Morgan’s controversial exit from the ITV programme earlier this year.
Since March 2021, Susanna has gone without a permanent co-host on GMB after Piers quit the show after six years.
Piers’ departure came after 41,000 people complained to Ofcom about the broadcaster’s remarks about the comments Meghan Markle gave about her mental health during her and Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
While ratings did plummet at the time of his exit, Susanna shared on Twitter that on Tuesday this week, the number of people who tuned in to watch GMB was up a fifth on what the viewership was the same time last year when Piers was still her co-star.
‘Celebrating yesterday’s fab @gmb ratings – peaking at 1.2m viewers and up 20% on the same day last year! Well done Team @gmb,’ she wrote.
One person who responded said that ‘it just goes to show that the programme doesn’t need Piers Morgan to improve its audience figures’.
However, others speculated that it might be due to the coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on the BBC.
In May, Piers took aim at Alastair Campbell during his guest stint on GMB with Susanna, saying that it was ‘amusing to see him boast on Twitter about his tremendous ratings success while briefly presenting from my old chair on Good Morning Britain’.
‘On his first day, only 630,000 viewers tuned in, a pitiful 18 per cent share of the total breakfast TV audience. (By comparison, on my last day, 1.3 million were watching, a 35 per cent share.).’ Piers wrote in his Mail Online column.
‘It appears that for all his Boris-like bluster, poor Al is a fork-tongued Weapon of Mass Ratings Destruction.’
Earlier this week, Susanna announced that she was taking a break from GMB, as the main presenters on ITV morning shows traditionally take a break from their hosting duties during the school summer holidays.
Susanna will be off the show until September, with an ITV spokesperson saying: ‘[July 27] was Susanna’s last day presenting Good Morning Britain ahead of her summer break, she will be back in September.
‘The family of GMB presenters will continue over the forthcoming weeks.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
