Susanna Reid became overwhelmed with emotion during Good Morning Britain today while discussing an autistic man who has been torn apart from his mum while in a care home.
The TV presenter discussed the pilot scheme of rapid Covid-19 testing in care homes to enable the elderly to see their loved ones during the coronavirus pandemic.
Along with her co-hosts Piers Morgan and Dr Hilary, Susanna was about to share the story of a 26-year-old severely autistic man in a care home who is ‘distraught’ after being unable to see his beloved mum for two months due to coronavirus restrictions.
However before she could go into the details, Susanna stopped short and fought back tears, clearly heartbroken by the story.
Dr Hilary then stepped in so the presenter could regain her composure and explained: ‘It is very distressing… It’s important to see their elderly relatives because they are coming to the end of their lives so they need to be in touch with the people who love them most.
‘It’s heartbreaking. It’s a very cruel consequence of this disease.
‘Do we protect them completely and isolate them from the people who love them most or accept there’s a balance of risk?’
Susanna then apologised for her moment and told viewers: ‘I’m so sorry that I waas affected by what’s happening but your stories coming in of the people you can’t see in care homes…
‘This care home testing pilot is going out to 20 care homes, this should now be in place in every care home.’
The TV presenter was flooded with messages of support for viewers, including one who stated: ‘Absolutely no requirement to apologise for being a caring and compassionate woman, Susanna. I guess you also related to that as Mother of two sons.’
Another agreed: ‘Please Susanna don’t ever apologise for showing your humanity and empathy for your viewers during this heartbreaking time for so many people.’
‘Susanna redid [sic]never apologies for showing your heart please don’t stop the nation love you,’ one said.
One viewer weighed in: ‘You have a massive heart Susanna. We love you.’
