Susanna Reid of Good Morning Britain, a mother, choked back tears as she thought about the sorrow of the parents of the Nottingham stabbing victims.
On Tuesday, three people were killed in an early morning attack, including students Grace Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19 years old.
As the third fatality, a 51-year-old man was discovered dead on a nearby road.
In a subsequent incident, three more people were rushed to the hospital after being hit by a van on Milton Street.
A 31-year-old man has been seized and is being held by police on suspicion of murder.
Susanna, 52, who has three children with her ex-husband, former sportswriter Dominic Cotton, became emotional as she spoke about the terrible loss as a parent on Wednesday’s GMB.
Becoming visibly emotional, she said: ‘I was saying earlier that, as you know, as a mum of three boys in their teens. I’ve got one at university. I’ve got a 19-year-old as well. Exactly the same age as Barnaby and Grace, who is about to go to university.
‘You send them off so proud that they’re beginning their first independent part of their lives. They’re young adults. They’re making their way.
‘But they’re still under your protection until that moment the door of the student halls of residence closes and pretty much every parent has a tear in their eye as they drive away, dropping them off.
‘You just can’t imagine what those families are going through. Well, actually, you do know what those families are going through.’
‘I can hear it in your voice,’ regular GMB contributor Kevin Maguire commented.
On Tuesday, Chief Constable Meynell said Nottinghamshire Police is still in the ‘early stages’ of the investigation and they were still working on determining a motive for the attack.
She added: ‘We are keeping an open mind and are working closely with counter-terrorism policing to establish the facts as we would normally do in this type of circumstance.
‘The families of all the victims have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
‘A team of dedicated detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and will continue to gather evidence over the coming days.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
