Susanna Reid joked that she was ‘surprised she wasn’t thrown out’ after giving Boris Johnson a grilling in his first Good Morning Britain interview in almost five years.
The Good Morning Britain presenter spoke to Lorraine immediately after wrapping up her interview with the Prime Minister, in which she held him to account over several issues including the cost of living crisis and the situation in Ukraine.
When asked if it was ‘worth the wait’, Susanna laughed and pulled a face before she told Lorraine: ‘I’m surprised I haven’t been thrown out, Lorraine!
‘Yeah, it was remarkable speaking to him. Look, it’s been almost five years since Boris Johnson has appeared on Good Morning Britain and for just over two of those years he has been Prime Minister.
‘Fascinating talking to him – you know, it’s historic even being in this building, even being in this room but of course the weight of those partygate fines hangs over these premises.’
Susanna had been praised by viewers for pushing Mr Johnson to answer the questions the public wants to know, and not letting him get off-topic to avoid answering what she had asked.
The interview had taken place 1791 days after the last time Mr Johnson appeared on the show, and Susanna began it by asking him: ‘Are you honest, Prime Minister?’.
While the interview itself was heated – with Susanna bringing up a case study of a 77-year-old woman called Elsie who rode the bus all day every day to avoid having to heat her own home as she can no longer afford to – the chat ended with a gaffe as she threw to Lorraine.
As Susanna introduced Lorraine Kelly, whose show was up next as the interview ended, Mr Johnson was heard asking: ‘Who’s Lorraine?!’, to the amusement of viewers.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
