The Apprentice 2022: Why is Claude Littner not on the show tonight?

The Apprentice fan-favourite Claude Littner will be missing from the 2022 series.

The 72-year-old business executive has been an aide on the programme for the past six years, keeping his eyes and ears on the 16 contestants along with Baroness Karren Brady.

However, things will be a little different this time around as Lord Alan Sugar reprises his hunt to find his next business partner.

Here’s everything you need to know about why Claude is absent.

Why is Claude Littner not on The Apprentice?

It was announced in July that Claude would not be appearing in the new series of The Apprentice.

Instead, former Apprentice winner and entrepreneur Tim Campbell will join Lord Alan Sugar and Baroness Karren Brady in the boardroom.

The decision came after Claude had an accident in April while riding an electric bike. He had to learn to walk again after injuring his right leg so badly that he required nine surgeries.

Claude, a former chief executive of Tottenham Hotspur and long-time friend and business associate of Lord Sugar, said the accident happened about a mile away from his home in Mill Hill, London.

‘I was just pottering along, I must have been doing no more than 10 kilometres an hour on this sort of two-track road,’ he told the PA News Agency at the time.

‘The next thing I knew, I was on the left-hand side of the street, my bike was in the middle of the road and I didn’t know what happened.

‘I suspect I hit a pothole or something like that, but I must have blanked out at the moment of impact, because the next thing I knew, I was lying on the ground.’

Claude said he thought he would ‘just get up’ and retrieve his bike, but realised upon looking down that he was seriously injured as the bone was sticking out of his leg.

He was rushed to the trauma unit at St Mary’s Hospital in an ambulance and says he awoke later to find ‘some surgeons looking at me and talking but I didn’t really know what they were saying’.

‘My wife and my sons were there as well and they (the doctors) decided they were going to amputate my leg,’ he recalled.

‘And then they had another chat about it and they said, “Look, let’s get him into theatre right away tonight and let’s see if we can save his leg”. And I went into theatre and it was a very long operation and they didn’t take my leg off.’

The businessman said he has lost two stone since the accident, but said that he is ‘untouchable mentally’ and has ‘absolute determination’ to recover.

Will Claude Littner return to The Apprentice?

There has been much speculation as to whether Claude will return to The Apprentice after the current 2022 series.

In December, Lord Sugar addressed his friend and co-star’s absence from the series and promised fans he will be coming back to the panel.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: ‘Just to clarify @claudelittner will be back. He had a serious accident just before filming started @bbcapprentice.’

The Apprentice airs Thursdays at 9pm on BBC One.
