The Bachelor: Matt James calls out ‘negative depictions of Black fathers’ amid emotional reunion with his estranged dad

The Bachelor’s Matt James shared a candid message about ‘negative depictions of Black fathers’ after he was seen reuniting with his estranged father on Monday night.

The ABC dating series took a serious turn as the 29-year-old reality star and his dad, Manny James, were filmed having a tough conversation in the lead up to the finale.

Taking to Twitter as the episode aired, Matt – who was raised by his mom – was eager to remind fans not to make judgments and assumptions.

The star explained that it was tough for fans to watch the chat without knowing the outside factors that may have been involved.

He posted: ‘Tonight’s convo with my dad was hard to experience, and it’s just as hard to watch all this time later, especially knowing the world is watching with me.

‘I just wanted to say that too often, we see dangerous stereotypes and negative depictions of Black fathers in media. And they have consequences when presented without context.’

He continued: ‘All I hope is that people watch that conversation with nuance, care and also an understanding that there are real systemic issues at play.

‘I’m so proud of myself for being vulnerable, and I’m so proud of my mother. I wouldn’t be who I am without my dad. That’s a fact.’

Before the chat, Matt explained in a confessional: ‘I still have a lot of fear about what commitment looks like based on him and my mom’s relationship. That’s not something I want to carry with me.

‘Harboring that negativity in my life hasn’t progressed any of my relationships. It’s hindered my growth. For me to move forward, I have to address those demons in my life.’

After opening up about how his infidelity affected the family, Manny stated: ‘I’m sorry I hurt you, son… Whatever I can do to make it better, I’ll work on it.

‘I want you to be happy for the rest of your life and I want you to have a relationship that’s healthy and not like what I went through. Plus, I know I don’t like this. And I don’t like it that you’re far away from me.’

Matt then told Manny he wants his dad in his future as the pair hugged in out in the moving scenes.

Last night also saw former The Bachelorette lead Rachel Lindsay appear to reference the emotional conversation in posts to her Instagram Story after the episode aired.

‘You guys, I’m breaking my hiatus from talking about The Bachelor in light of what I saw tonight on tonight’s episode,’ she shared.

In the caption, she wrote that she ‘can’t keep quiet’ about the episode’s ‘perpetuation of stereotypes in the black community.’

The Bachelor airs Mondays on ABC in the US, and the series is available to stream on hayu in the UK.
