The second season of The Boys marked one of most bombastic, adrenaline-fuelled TV moments of the year back in September – and it’s caught the attention of one Barack Obama.
The former President praised the show as one of his cultural picks of 2020, which has helped him unwind while writing his memoir A Promised Land.
The Boys has been a huge success for Amazon, and Barack clearly considers himself a big fan.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his top TV choices from the past year, Barack said: ‘Better Call Saul, because of its great characters and examination of the dark side of the American dream.
‘The Good Place — it’s a wise and sweet combination of goofy comedy and big philosophical questions.’
He then added: ‘And Watchmen and The Boys, for how they turn superhero conventions on their heads to lay bare issues of race, capitalism, and the distorting effects of corporate power and mass media. Oh, and the NBA playoffs — because it’s hoops.’
The news has gone down a treat with the cast and crew from the show, with creator Eric Kripke sharing his delight on Twitter.
‘Ummm. You guys? HOLY. S**T,’ he wrote. ‘Thanks for watching, @BarackObama. If you ever wanna hang out, hit me up in my DM’s. (But seriously, this is amazing, THANKS for the shout out).’
Jack Quaid added: ‘I was today years old when I found out president @BarackObama watches @TheBoysTV. Can I stay this age forever?’
Laz Alonso, who plays Mother’s Milk on the programme, also tweeted saying ‘you never know who’s watching and who u have the ability to inspire.’
The Boys is one of the superhero hits of the last two years, following a team of vigilantes tracking down superheroes who are abusing their powers. Season two won over critics in September.
Barack has posted his annual list of cultural highlights for years, and even recently joked that he’d like Drake to play him in a biopic – something he believes his daughters would be ‘fine with’.
The Boys is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
