Netflix have released new photos from The Crown season four of the moment Princess Diana and Prince Charles gave their iconic engagement interview with the memorable line: ‘Whatever “in love” means.’
In the photos, Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) is seen wearing a blue suit with white shirt and large bow on the collar as Charles (Josh O’Connor) stands behind her, dressed smartly in a grey suit and tie, with one hand placed on her shoulder.
One fan noted: ‘Nailed the casting,’ in reference to the accuracy of the poses and outfits of the real life Charles and Diana.
In 1981, Charles and then Lady Diana Spencer announced their engagement to the world in their first TV interview at Buckingham Palace.
It was widely described as ‘awkward’ as Charles responded when asked whether he was in love with Diana: ‘Whatever “in love” means.’
The Prince of Wales of course went on to marry Diana but his heart – as we now know – truly belonged to Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
Emma, who is taking on the coveted role of the late princess, has admitted she would ‘run a mile’ if asked to join the royal family.
She told the Radio Times: ‘I’d run a mile if anyone in the Royal Family asked me to marry them!
‘I’m indifferent to the royal family really, but I do feel sorry for them. We know what happened to Diana. It’s an impossible situation.’
The 24-year-old actress added of her character: ‘Diana had been raised in a very aristocratic family and she knew the rules of the game, she knew exactly what she was doing at Balmoral when she was flirting with Philip…
‘She knew she was there to impress. She had this shyness to her that I think was authentic, but she was also naturally charming and she knew it.
‘I wouldn’t go so far as to say she was manipulative, but almost.’
The Crown season four debuts on Netflix on November 15.
