The last chapter of The Crown has arrived, with the release date for season 6 of the critically acclaimed Netflix series officially disclosed.
In a new trailer for the forthcoming final season, Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II is promised a melancholy trip, following in the footsteps of Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.
To say we’re delighted is an understatement, but we can’t believe the historical drama is nearly over.
Starting with Claire, an ominous clock tolls in the background while her version of the monarch is heard saying: ‘The Crown is a sign of permanence, is something you are, not what you do.’
‘Some element of our natural identities is always gone,’ Olivia’s voice continues. We’ve all given up something. It is not an option. It’s a duty,’ the elder Queen says as she walks up a stairs and into a chamber.
Finally, in the voiceover, Imelda says, ‘But what about the life I put away, the lady I put behind,’ as she prepares to step on the Buckingham Palace balcony in front of thousands of people.
While Claire and Olivia are not shown repeating their roles as the Queen, references to their younger selves occur in the teaser.
Claire’s Queen Elizabeth II may be seen on a TV monitor in black and white, while Olivia’s can be seen in a framed image.
