The Doctor to be exterminated by Daleks in New Year’s Day Doctor Who special that even shocked Jodie Whittaker

Doctor Who fans are in for a surprise as the main character is set to be killed by Daleks in the New Year’s Day special.

As Jodie Whittaker prepares to bid farewell to the Time Lord, she admitted she was ‘shocked’ when she first read the script, since her departure isn’t scheduled until later next year.

‘When I first read the episode I genuinely thought, “Somebody has decided to write me out a bit sooner than I thought!”‘ Jodie said.

But Jodie needn’t panic, as this Doctor has more life left in her for now.

Instead of properly ‘dying,’ the Doctor will become trapped in a ‘time loop’ where she repeatedly dies and comes back to life.

Speaking on what the scenes were like to film, the 39-year-old said: ‘It’s brilliant to play because the first time, for the Doctor, it’s as if you’re grasping at those seconds and that realisation that it could be your last moment.’

Showrunner Chris Chibnall explained: ‘These are execution Daleks — not trying to destroy the world, but trying to destroy the Doctor.’

All 12 previous Doctors have survived the Daleks and their ‘exterminate, exterminate’ cries, although David Tennant’s Doctor had to regenerate into a new body in 2008.

The Daleks first battled against original the Doctor – played by William Hartnell – in 1963.

Jodie’s 13th Doctor will kickstart 2022 with an action-packed set of episodes.

The festive special will feature guest stars Aisling Bea, Adjani Salmon and Pauline McLynn.

The episode will follow ELF storage owner Sarah (Aisling) and customer Nick (Adjani), who visits his unit every year on New Year’s Eve.

This year, however, their night turns out to be a little different than planned.

The festive episode is the first of three Doctor Who specials airing in 2022.

The second airs in spring and Jodie’s final feature-length special will transmit in autumn as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations.
