The trailer for The Full Monty TV series is now here.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 26 years since the critically acclaimed picture, starring Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson, and Mark Addy, originally touched our screens, and now the group is back together.
The 1997 film, directed by Peter Cattaneo, was an instant blockbuster, earning both a Bafta and an Oscar and becoming the highest-grossing picture ever filmed in the UK at the time.
After the movie landed on Disney Plus last year, a whole new generation was introduced to the story of six unemployed men vying for glory with a full-frontal male striptease act, and it was later announced that a TV show was in the works.
The new limited series follows the original cast of unlikely strippers decades after they became local superstars, as they navigate their lives in post-industrial Sheffield and deal with the challenges of parenting.
Fans have previously seen production stills with the group reuniting on site, and now a full-length trailer shows the fellas back again.
The trailer opens with Gaz (Carlyle) and Horse (Paul Barber) having a singalong in a café, before a former fan recognises them as the former strippers and asks if they are still active.
To which Dave (Addy) scoffs: ‘What do you think?’
Gaz appears to be struggling with fatherhood as he attempts to connect to his teenage daughter, admitting they ‘haven’t seen much of each other in a while’ and is hoping to ‘make up for lost time.’
Dave also accuses Gaz of being absent from his daughter’s life, scoffing, ‘Like you’d know,’ when Gaz insists his daughter is ‘doing well.’
Gaz hits back at his friend, angrily pointing out that ‘you don’t have any kids’ – which, going by Dave’s reaction, is a sore point in his life.
While there are some serious moments in the upcoming performance, it also appears to be plenty of laughter, including some slapstick comedy, as seen by the trailer’s repeated trips, falls, and clumsy dancing.
According to Disney, ‘the series will explore the brighter, sillier and more humane way forward where communal effort can still triumph over adversity’.
‘We’re chuffed to bits to get all the Monty Men back together again — now with a chaotic entourage of children, grandchildren, pets and assorted hangers-on — to see what life in Sheffield is like 25 years on,’ creator and writer Simon Beaufoy previously said.
Disney director of scripted content Lee Mason added: ‘25 years ago Simon introduced us to a group of funny, fearless and resilient unemployed working-class men from Sheffield and the world fell in love with them.
‘We’re delighted to reunite the original cast for this brand-new series on Disney+ to catch up with these iconic characters and what they’ve been up to since we last saw them on stage in all their glory, and we can’t wait to introduce a host of exciting new faces and characters.’
The Full Monty TV series is coming to Disney Plus in June.
