The Last Of Us: Everything you need to know as Game of Thrones stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey lead

The TV adaptation of post-apocalyptic video game The Last Of Us has officially announced key members of its cast, with Game of Thrones stars leading the way on the highly-anticipated series.

The Last Of Us, which first launched on PlayStation in 2013, follows a smuggler called Joel who is tasked with transporting a girl called Ellie to safety as they navigate a dangerous world devastated by a zombie-style pandemic.

Last year, it was announced that HBO had ordered an entire series for the TV show, rather than just a pilot episode. And now, it has been announced that The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal and His Dark Materials actor Bella Ramsey will be joining the production, both of whom starred in Game of Thrones.

Here’s everything you need to know about the cast for the upcoming action-packed drama.

Who is playing Joel?

Pedro, 45, has been cast in the lead role as Joel, a man hardened by the loss of his daughter.

A survivor by nature, Joel begins to soften as his connection with Ellie grows stronger as the pair traipse across the US in the hope of safety and a possible end to the pandemic.

After playing the fan-favourite Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, Pedro went on to portray Javier Peña on Netflix series Narcos.

More recently, he has delighted Star Wars fans across the world with his performance as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, the critically-acclaimed Disney Plus series.

He has also starred in films including Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Triple Frontier and Wonder Woman 1984 as villain Maxwell Lord.

Pedro celebrated his casting in The Last Of Us on Twitter with a mind-blowing and skull emoji, writing: ‘These are the right emojis yeah?’

In another tweet, he wrote: ‘…no matter what, you keep finding something to fight for.’

Speaking of the actor’s casting, Neil Druckmann, the director of the video game and co-executive producer of the TV adaptation, said: ‘Stoked to have Pedro aboard our show!’

Who is playing Ellie?

Bella, 17, has been cast as Ellie, who fans of The Last Of Us video game recently caught up with in last year’s sequel.

The actor quickly became one of the standouts of Game of Thrones when she was introduced as Lyanna Mormont in season six, the formidable 10-year-old head of House Mormont

In the final season of the HBO fantasy show, Bella took part in the huge battle sequence that occurred at Winterfell, fearlessly battling a Giant.

She recently starred in season two of His Dark Materials as Angelica, a resident of the haunted city of Cittàgazze.

During an interview last year, Bella expressed her desire to take on more stunt-heavy roles.

‘The last episode that I was in of Game of Thrones in season 8, that was quite action-packed, but I think an action film would be really cool [to do],’ she said excitedly at the time.

‘One where I have to do lots of martial arts or running or jumping. All of the stunts and cool stuff like that.’

From 2017 to 2020, Bella also played the lead role Mildred Hubble in The Worst Witch.

Following the announcement of Bella’s casting, Neil said: ‘We’re absolutely thrilled to have Bella join the TLoU family!’
