The Masked Singer: Gabrielle had a strop and almost quit the show on the first day of filming

Popstar Gabrielle threw a strop and almost quit The Masked Singer UK after not being able to breathe in her costume.

On Saturday, the Out of Reach hitmaker was the latest celebrity to be unveiled on the ITV show as Harlequin.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk and other press after her elimination, Gabrielle explained that she almost didn’t take part in the competition at all.

‘The first day that I went into to start filming the show because I’d been rehearsing at home.

‘I went in and they were like “Here’s your costume” which I had been fitted for before and “Here’s the mask” which I hadn’t had the experience of singing in prior to that moment.

‘Put it on, “Let’s do the first recording”. I nearly died. Nobody prepares you for the weight of that thing, no one prepares you for the enclosed space. I was having panic attacks and I was hot.’

‘It’s something that I’d never done before, singing but singing with a mask, this heavy mask that required two people to put on, are you joking?,’ she added.

‘I text my manager Lisa and said “Call the lawyers, I am not doing this I am going home” and I’m not even joking.’

Gabrielle, who stunned with her rendition of Ava Max’s Sweet but Psycho on Saturday night, went on to add that bosses were ‘bending over backwards’ to keep her in the show.

She continued: ‘I don’t think they have someone on standby if you choose not to do the show anymore, that would have been unprecedented.

‘But I didn’t care at that moment, I was like “I’m going home, it’s the end of my career, I’m hot”. There were a million emotions I was going through at that time.

‘Everyone was bending over backwards to keep me in the show after my first day of initially having a major strop because I felt so unprepared.’

Despite almost quitting, the 50-year-old said she was glad she that took part in the end.

‘I’m glad I didn’t run off in the beginning,’ she added.

‘It was a lot at the time, and now I’m glad and really pleased that I completed it.’

Gabrielle was one of two stars revealed in the semi-finals, with TV host Sue Perkins surprising everyone when she was revealed to be Dragon.

Badger, Sausage and Robin are the three mystery stars left in the competition and will be revealed during next Saturday night’s Grand Finale.

Last year’s winner, Nicola Roberts, will return as a guest judge to help unmask her successor.

The Masked Singer continues Saturday at 7pm on ITV.

The Masked Singer series 2: Who is behind each mask?

With the nation more or less confined to their living rooms every Saturday night, The Masked Singer has proven to be something of a lockdown 3.0 saviour. While the performances are of course a draw, most of the fun lies in guessing just who is behind each mask. Here are the clues and theories so far:
