The Masked Singer: Gary Lineker insists he’s not participating on show as Doughnuts

Gary Lineker has insisted he is not underneath the Doughnuts costume on The Masked Singer.

Doughnuts was one of the contestants to perform on Saturday night’s opening episode and they shared a number of clues before taking to the stage to sing Eye Of The Tiger By Survivor.

Judges Davina McCallJonathan RossMo Gilligan, and Rita Ora hazarded their guesses at who could be underneath the guise and ex-footballer star Gary was one of the names thrown into the hat after references to football and crisps.

But Gary took to social media to stress he’s not participating in the ITV series, not now, not ever (unless he’s bluffing, of course).

The Match Of The Day presenter spoke out after author Emma Kennedy wrote on Twitter: ‘Doughnut: @GaryLineker (No need to thank me).’

Responding to the claim, Gary penned: ‘You’ll never see me on that show…or Strictly, ever.’

Well, that’s that then.

But all is not lost as a number of Masked Singer fans are convinced Doughnuts could be former professional footballer Michael Owen, with some saying his tone of voice is ‘unmistakable’.

Doughnuts proved a hit with the audience, while clues for the character included that they were ‘extra speedy’, have ‘never been the lazy sort’ and they ‘run ice rings around the competition’.

Could Michael be under the mask?

Besides Doughnuts performing, Mushroom, Robobunny, Chandelier, Lionfish and Firework took to the stage.

Sadly, it was the end of the road for Chandelier, who was later unmasked as singer Heather Small.

The Masked Singer is set to return tonight with another six celebrities performing with Rockhopper taking on Traffic Cone, Poodle going up against Snow Leopard, and Panda taking on Bagpipes.

The Masked Singer continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
