With rumours swirling around who the celebrities could be underneath the costumes on The Masked Singer UK, one EastEnders star has firmly asserted that she is not on the 2022 series as Mushroom.

Last night, Will Young became the latest celebrity to be eliminated from the competition, being unmasked as Lionfish after landing in the bottom two with Firework.

From Michael Owen as Doughnuts to Mark Feehily as Robobunny, Twitter users have thrown numerous names into the mix as they try to guess the identities of the costumed performers.

Following Mushroom’s performance of There Are Worse Things I Could Do from Grease for Movie Week on Saturday evening, several people expressed their belief that it could be EastEnders star Shona McGarty under the mask.

However, the actor – who’s played Whitney Dean on the soap since 2008 – revealed that wasn’t the case to her Twitter followers.

In a tweet filled with mushroom-related puns, she wrote: ‘After receiving a few messages. I can confirm I am NOT the “Mushroom” on #TheMaskedSinger although, I am a “Fungi”!’ she said.

The 30-year-old then added: ‘Sorry about the layout of my tweet, there wasn’t “Mushroom”.’

Several fans commented underneath Shona’s tweet with mushroom puns of their own, with one saying: ‘These jokes are in spore taste.’

‘Not that old chestnut! I’d button it if I were you. Consider the matter closed cup,’ another wrote, while someone else said: ‘What a load of shiitake that is!!!!’

We have to admit – those jokes are really growing on us.

While Mushroom might not be Shona, several viewers are convinced that the singer is none other than Absolutely Fabulous star Jane Horrocks.

One of the main clues pointing towards Jane is that the celebrity said that their career ‘started out a little bit fizzy’ – and the actor played Bubble in Ab Fab.

After Will was unmasked as Lionfish, having performed a beautiful rendition of I Will Always Love You from The Bodyguard, he admitted that he’s only ever seen clips of the show before.

In a post shared on social media, the singer wrote: ‘It’s me, #Lionfish! Wow what an experience, thank you @maskedsingeruk @itv – I had so much fun!’

Will is the third celebrity to have been revealed, following Heather Small as Chandelier and Gloria Hunniford as Snow Leopard.

The Masked Singer returns on Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
