The Masked Singer UK: From Badger to Dragon, most difficult costumes to wear revealed

The celebrities competing on The Masked Singer UK definitely have their work cut out for them.

Not only do they have to impress a panel of judges, a studio audience and millions watching at home with their vocal talents, but they also have to contend with performing while wearing extraordinary, eccentric and extremely physically-demanding costumes on stage.

For us watching from home, we can only imagine how difficult it must be to smash a song while dressed as a Badger, a Dragon or a Bush Baby.

During a recent conversation with, The Masked Singer UK’s costume designer Tim Simpson revealed which of the outfits are the most difficult to wear.

One of the biggest issues that the contestants have to cope with, Tim explained, is the heat.

‘I think Badger is quite a hot costume,’ Tim said. ‘I think heat is definitely one of the issues with the costumes. They have so many layers and normally you’re able to breathe really easily and so we have to put a lot of ventilation in to make sure that the performers don’t overheat.’

When it came to creating the ‘incredibly hot’ costume for Bush Baby, the designers had to take their ingenuity to the next level to ensure it was ventilated enough.

‘Not only has Bush Baby got a huge onesie on and a big furry head, but actually there’s an entire fur costume underneath the onesie in order to make the onesie look right,’ Tim outlined.

‘So we had to put additional ventilation into the head of Bush Baby in order to allow some heat to escape.’

In order to ‘let enough air out’, large holes were cut inside the ears ‘so you can actually put your hands in from both sides and shake hands with somebody through Bush Baby’s head’, he said.

Another costume that required a bit of tweaking was Dragon, which Tim reckons is ‘definitely the most physical’ of the line-up.

‘Dragon is a pretty physical costume to wear,’ he said.

‘When the performer first got into it, the length of the shoulder rig that we’ve got wasn’t quite right.

‘They were having a bit of difficulty with their movement, so they were quite waddly in the first performance.’

After noticing how Dragon’s costume was hindering the celebrity’s movements, The Masked Singer UK’s costume designers realised they needed to ‘help train the performer to actually enjoy the costume’.

‘We needed to make it easier for them. And they really got into it,’ Tim recalled.

‘They really enjoyed it and just enjoyed being Dragon, but it took that little bit of tweaking. Because it’s big and physical and a lot of the weight goes out behind you.’

Tim noted that the costume for Sausage also has a significant impact on the way the performer is able to move, as they need to ‘walk with their legs apart in order to accommodate the little cone at the bottom’.

Hence how Sausage got their signature strut!

Last week, Swan became the latest contestant to be eliminated from the competition, with singer and actor Martine McCutcheon revealed behind the mask.

Tim noted that the outfit would have been ‘difficult’ for Martine to wear, as ‘it’s much wider than you think’.

‘When you’re in it, you turn around and you keep clonking people with the wings,’ he said.

Fortunately for Martine, she was still able to stun viewers with her impressive renditions of Gloria Gaynor’s I Am What I Am and Alannah Myles’s Black Velvet.

Who will become the next famous face to be unmasked? We’re on the edge of our seats waiting to find out.

The Masked Singer UK airs tonight at 7pm on ITV.
