Heather Small has admitted she had to ‘have a think’ before taking part in The Masked Singer, after she became the first contestant to be eliminated from the contest.

The M People icon, who was unveiled as Chandelier on Saturday night, was sent home by judges Rita OraJonathan RossMo Gilligan and Davina McCall after landing in the bottom three with Mushroom and Firework.

The 56-year-old soul star impressed everyone with her rendition of Patsy Cline’s Crazy, but the panel was a little confused as to why she chose to sing the song a few octaves higher than the original.

Following her exit, Heather explained that the show was a perfect opportunity for her to try something new.

‘I wanted to see if I could, after 30 years of singing, disguise my voice, put on a different persona’, she said.

‘But at the same time, I wanted to (hide) my voice but not make it look like I had robbed a living for 30 years.’

Masked Singer UK fans were astounded by the big reveal, with several admitting they had no idea it was the musician behind the mask when her natural singing voice is so recognisable.

‘Well, who on Earth managed to guess that Chandelier was Heather Small?’ one person tweeted.

While celebrities in the past viewed the bizarre show as pure light-hearted fun, Heather said she had her own reasons for entering.

‘We all do things for our own reasons and part of my reasoning was that I wanted to see,’ she added.

‘I didn’t make it to the end but I still feel like I won because the panel’s reaction was priceless.

‘I don’t see it as a singing show, I see it as a guessing game.’

Loose Women’s Gloria Hunniford was the second celebrity eliminated from the competition after being unmasked as the Snow Leopard.

Fans have been trying to guess the famous faces behind the bold characters: Bagpipes, Lionfish, Doughnuts, Traffic Cone, Panda, Rockhopper, Mushroom, Firework, Poodle, and Robobunny.

The Masked Singer continues on Saturdays at 7pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
