The Masked Singer: When did Pat Cash win Wimbledon and is he Scottish as he is revealed to be Bagpipes?

The Masked Singer revealed a tennis legend in its fourth week, with former Wimbedon champion Pat Cash being unmasked as the mysterious Bagpipes.

Davina McCall correctly identified the 56-year-old, leaving Jonathan Ross fuming after guessing that fellow tennis ace John McEnroe was inside the tartan costume.

Asked why he decided to appear on the show, Pat said: ‘I’ve always been a frustrated rock star and fancied doing The Masked Singer from the first day I saw it.’

Pat is of course well known for being a former Wimbledon champion – but just when did he win the tournament? And did his Scottish-themed costume hint at a background north of the border?

Here’s what you need to know…

When did Pat Cash win Wimbledon?

Pat Cash was crowned Men’s Singles champion in 1987.

He was just 22 years old at the time, beating the then World Number One Ivan Lendl in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Pat celebrated his victory by running into the stands to celebrate with his family and his coach Ian Barclay – the first time anybody had done so.

I joke about it that I beat three top players to win the Wimbledon title, but all people remember me for now is going up into the stands,’ Cash told ATP Tour in 2017.

‘It was pre-planned, but I didn’t think about it too well. I didn’t want to jinx it, so I didn’t think about how to get up there or who to hug first.’

It did however, lead to a string of subsequent champions running into the stands to celebrate with loved ones and with their coaches – with Cash referring to it in one of Bagpipes’ clues, which related to having ‘started a tradition’.

Is Pat Cash Scottish?

Despite the Scottish-themed disguise, Pat Cash is actually Australian by birth.

He was born on May 22 1965 in Melbourne, and now lives in London.

However he did reveal on The Masked Singer that the Bagpipes costume was a nod to his Scottish ancestry.

‘I do have Scottish heritage, sorry if that was confusing,’ he told the judges after being unmasked – although did not elaborate further.

Cash is the son of an American mother and an Australia father, Pat Cash Sr, who was an Australian Rules footballer, playing for Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League.

His father sadly passed away in 2008.

The Masked Singer continues on ITV next Saturday night at 7pm.

Who is behind the mask?
