The new Chaser Darragh Ennis reveals why he rejected quizzer name ‘The Professor’

The new Chaser Darragh Ennis has revealed why he rejected his initial quizzer name of The Professor – and that he didn’t find out his actual show name until he got on to the set.

Darragh appeared as a contestant on the ITV quiz show in 2017, and after auditioning to be a Chaser for four years, he finally bagged himself a spot on the show.

All of the Chasers have alter ego names on the programme – Jenny Ryan is The Vixen, while Shaun Wallace is The Dark Destroyer.

Speaking with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on Monday’s This Morning, Darragh who has been nicknamed as D-Ennis the Menace, explained that he was actually meant to be called something else.

‘I work in the university here in Oxford and that’s a title [professor] that you really have to earn and I think people would be very annoyed if I started calling myself the Professor,’ he told the hosts.

‘So I said I didn’t want that but they didn’t tell me what my name would be until I was on set. I was on stage, waiting to go on when I first heard.’

Darragh went on to add that at first, he thought it was a joke when producers offered him a role as one of The Chasers.

He continued: ‘A couple of days after recording I got a phone call from one of the producers, which I originally thought was a joke, and then it turned out it was real and they were asking me to come in for auditions so I just went in.

‘I spent a very long time – that was four years ago. So I spent a very long time doing auditions and trials and training before they trusted me on the show.’

The 47-year-old made his debut on The Chase last week and his first appearance went down a storm with viewers, with many saying that Darragh was their ‘favourite’ Chaser.

‘I love the new chaser. I want him to be my teacher when I was at school #TheChase,’ a viewer commented.

‘This new chaser seems nice! He must be so nervous to go on here and be a chaser,’ another agreed.

‘Specially from being a contestant. Good on him and well done for getting this job. #thechase.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
