The Office US is reportedly being considered for a revival, but it’s safe to say that not everyone is on board.
The sitcom, which was a version of Ricky Gervais’ classic BBC mockumentary comedy, aired from 2005 to 2013 and starred Rainn Wilson, John Krasinkski, and Jenna Fischer.
The programme has just been off the air for a decade, but it looks a revival is already in the works, with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) announcing a ‘tentative agreement’ that suggests the writers strike is coming to an end.
If the agreement is approved by the board and members, the strike would be formally ended after more than a month, and people are now wondering what the event may signify as studios and authors appear to be coming to terms.
Puck News writers Matthew Belloni and Jonathan Handel have speculated about the imminent impact, and claimed The Office US creator Greg Daniels is keen on a reboot.
‘Greg Daniels is set to do a reboot of The Office, for instance,’ they wrote, while also claiming ‘Disney’s Dana Walden will finally be able to announce the return of her BFF Ryan Murphy from Netflix’.
Of course, nothing is confirmed, and a lot of fans are hoping it stays that way as they insist any potential revamped version ‘won’t be the same’.
‘They want to take my memories away from me,’ wrote one person, while another fan insisted that ‘not every show or movie needs a reboot’.
‘This sounds like a terrible idea, but hopefully they can make it work,’ someone else added, clearly trying to look on the positive side.
Others argued that the show ‘ended where it needed to’ and asked if ‘we really need this’, as a different person quipped: ‘They should have kept on strike💀’
‘The question as to whether it’ll be good or not is if it’s a reboot of the US or the UK. The US is still too recent to need one, the UK would make more sense,’ argued someone else, with other people staying more hopeful.
‘I’m so happy it’s coming back,’ wrote one keen fan, as another openminded person added: ‘I moaned when they remade the UK version of The Office & it spawned one of my favourite pieces of entertainment, so I’ll hold back any reservations on this one until I see it.’
Another teased: ‘I wonder if the ppl complaining about the office getting a reboot and asking for “the original cast” know that the office (US) is a remake 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡’
Daniels has already chimed in on the subject, stating that a prospective reappearance would have to be more of a spin-off if people were interested.
‘I can’t tell whether fans would want more of it, and when I say more of it, I don’t think it would be the same characters,’ he told Collider last year.
He added: ‘I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way [The] Mandalorian is like an extension of Star Wars. But I don’t know if that would be something people would want or not, it’s hard to tell.’
It remains to be seen how the WGA strike, which is nearing its end, will affect the foreseeable future, and whether new projects will be revealed in the aftermath.
