The past catches up with Jeremy Renner as he meets Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop in Christmassy first trailer for Marvel spin off Hawkeye

Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld team up to take down the bad guys and be home in time for Christmas in the first trailer for Marvel spin off Hawkeye.

Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the trailer reveals Clint Barton (Renner) is forced to abandon his family over the festive period when a shadowy figure surfaces.

Thinking it was to do with the time he went rogue after losing his wife and children in The Snap, Clint sets out to take the mystery person down, only to come face to face with Kate Bishop (Steinfeld), who calls herself ‘the greatest archer in the world’.

Clint and Kate band together to take down a bigger threat, but from the looks of things their alliance is an uneasy one as Hawkeye’s protégé rubs him up the wrong way.

The festive setting is unexpected, as is the fact Marvel appear to have gone straight down the light-hearted comedy route for this one after more hard-hitting offerings such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and WandaVision.

Set to It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Andy Williams, the two arrow slingers kick butt, get caught up in explosions and generally grate on each other.

And there’s a great brief shot of what looks like the fictional Avengers themed Broadway show Rogers: The Musical, which should be a hilarious moment, and Lucky the Pizza Dog getting into the Christmas spirit with some reindeer antlers.

Jeremy, 50, has spent a decade portraying expert marksman Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing in Thor and going on to become one of the original members of the Avengers.

He also popped up in Black Widow – although it was a voice cameo.

Hawkeye arrives on Disney+ on November 24.
