The Punisher star Jon Bernthal has teased that there could be hope of a third season of the Marvel show following its cancellation.

In 2016, Marvel fans were introduced to Jon’s version of comic book character Frank Castle, otherwise known as The Punisher, when he appeared in the second season of Daredevil.

A year later, The Punisher’s eponymous show was released on Netflix, with Jon, 44, resuming his role as the deadly vigilante.

Following two positively-received seasons, in February last year it was announced that The Punisher had been cancelled.

However, according to its star, the doors may not have closed forever.

‘There’s always hope,’ Jon said during a recent appearance on the Geek House Show podcast.

‘There’s no question that there’s a lot of people that… it’s unbelievably humbling how much people sort of responded to this version of Frank, and I can’t tell you how much it means to me because he means so much to me. He’s in my blood, he’s in my bones.’

The actor explained that in his opinion, it’s not a question of ‘whether you get the opportunity to do it or not’, but more a question of ‘what you do with the opportunity you have’.

‘So it’s not about whether we do it, it’s about getting it right, and doing the version that the fans really deserve. And we’ll see. I mean, all of those decisions are made in rooms that I’m not invited into, and that’s ok with me,’ he said.

Jon added that while he feels ‘enormously blessed’ to be currently doing work that feels ‘fulfilling’, he’ll never let go of The Punisher.

‘Frank’s always there, he’s always a part of me,’ he said.

‘And when we get the call to go, I’ll be ready, and I’ll make sure that I do everything I can to make sure that we do it right, or we won’t do it at all.’

The Punisher wasn’t the only Marvel show cancelled by Netflix, with Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist also facing the axe.

The first two seasons of The Punisher are available to watch on Netflix.
