Fans of The Simpsons have been driven to tears after rewatching a decades-old episode, arguing that it strikes ‘much harder’ now.
The animation has been on our televisions since 1989, and it has provided us with some extremely memorable moments, as well as some pretty spooky forecasts.
On Reddit, people couldn’t help but reminisce over a season two episode, saying that the scenes still made them cry years later.
In the 1990 episode Bart Gets An F, Mrs Krabappel reprimanded the child for forgetting to complete an assignment and then failing a history exam, telling him that if he didn’t improve his marks, he’d have to repeat the school year.
Despite his best efforts to study, he missed a passing grade by one point and burst into tears in front of his instructor, touching everyone’s hearts.
Reddit user Elephant8myPlatoon shared a screenshot of Bart and Mrs Krabappel on the sub, explaining: ‘As someone who grew up with unnoticed ADHD, this scene always kills me.’
In the comments below, TheAnalyticalJoker agreed: “This scene hits a lot harder today.” Bart did everything he could to prepare and gave it his all, but it was insufficient.
‘Edna‘s compassion in the situation was incredibly heartwarming. Scenes like this are why we really miss you, Mrs. Krabappel.’
MatthewRotherham shared: ‘”I would have thought you would be used to failing by now,” is one of the most destroying lines in the entire series.’
‘And said in such a comforting way too. Both hilarious and crushing,’ Khiva responded. ‘This is why we all come back to the show, even early on they were packing in the layers.’
AMG788 penned: ‘I’ve seen this episode a million times, and I’ve cried a million times. I’ve never related to something so much. I had a “I really tried this time” moment, and never really tried much after that. This scene is so heartbreaking.’
As LydiaBogan added: ‘I feel like this scene hits wayyyyy harder today. Because Bart did everything in his power to do his best and prepare, but it still wasn’t enough. Edna’s empathy/compassion in this scene is very heartwarming to me.’
At the end of the episode, Bart received a score of 59, indicating that he failed the test and would have to retake the year.
‘What’s the matter? I would think you’d be used to failing by now,’ a baffled Mrs Krabappel questioned, as he insisted: ‘No, you don’t understand. I really tried this time. I really tried! This is as good as I could do, and I still failed!’
As she tried to console him by stating it was a ‘high F’, he sobbed harder, startling her with
‘You just demonstrated applied knowledge,’ the teacher cheered. ‘And due to the difficulty and relative obscurity of the reference, you deserve an extra point on your exam. It’s only fair.’
With that extra mark, his grade jumped to a D-, meaning he passed the test and could remain on track to complete school as planned.
We do love a committed Bart Simpson.
