The Terror: Cast, time and is it based on a true story?

There’s an eerie drama arriving on BBC Two this week, with The Terror airing on primetime TV in the UK for the first time.

Ridley Scott acts as executive producer on the series, with the anthology horror set to terrify viewers over the coming weeks.

The show, which originally aired on AMC in the US back in 2018, is based on Captain Sir John Franklin’s Royal Navy expedition to the Arctic in 1845.

The explorer attempted to discover the Northwest Passage during the doomed journey, and the story is reinterpreted for the series with a star-studded cast.

The story takes place on two ships – the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror – as their crews are haunted by a mysterious monster known as the Tuunbaq.

Here’s everything you need to know about the series.

There’s an impressive cast to look out for, with Chernobyl star Jared Harris taking on the role of Captain Francis Crozier and Game of Thrones’ Ciarán Hinds playing Sir John Franklin.

Motherland actor Paul Ready steps into the role of Dr. Harry Goodsir, who was the assistant surgeon on HMS Erebus.

The Crown’s Tobias Menzies also appears as Commander James Fitzjames.

Is the Terror based on a true story?

While the monstrous Tuunbaq is a work of fiction, The Terror is indeed inspired by real-life events.

The drama is based on the novel by Dan Simmons of the same name, which focused on the expedition carried out by Captain Sir John Franklin in the mid 19th century.

The journey saw two ships depart from England and never return, with all 24 officers and 110 men onboard perishing after they ran aground on ice in horrifying circumstances.

Reports of cannibalism taking place on board the ships were later confirmed by modern excavations.

What time is The Terror on?

The Terror begins on Wednesday, March 3 at 9pm on BBC Two. Episodes will then air weekly at 9pm on Wednesdays and be made available on the iPlayer.
