The new year is getting off to a good start with the arrival of The Tourist, starring Jamie Dornan, on BBC One.

Dornan leads the brand new mystery thriller, which is set in Australia and runs for six episodes.

He is joined by The Avengers and The Matrix’s Hugo Weaving, Line of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin and Dumplin’ star Danielle Macdonald in the star-studded cast, with fans having waited impatiently for over a year to sink their teeth into the thriller.

The Irish actor, best known for starring in 50 Shades of Grey and The Fall, was announced as the lead role in January last year and instantly had fans riled up as he spoke about the new show.

Jamie had said that the scripts for The Tourist were some of the most exciting he had ever read – but fans have some questions about the new show.

So, what is The Tourist about, who is in the cast, and is it based on a true story?

What is The Tourist about?

The Tourist, from BBC and HBO, tells the story of an Irish man who literally loses his mind after a truck intentionally smashes into his car while driving in the Australian Outback.

Jamie Dornan’s character later wakes up in hospital and cannot remember a thing: his name, what he was doing in Australia, and who – or what – wants him dead.

The drama follows Jamie’s character – known simply as The Man – as he tries to re-discover who he is, uncovering secrets and bone-chilling truths along the way.

Set over six episodes, the first instalment will air on BBC One and iPlayer at 9pm on New Year’s Day.

If the mind-blowing premise of The Tourist seems too incredible to be based on a true story, well, that’s because it’s not.

The Tourist is not based on a true story, rather it comes from the minds of Harry and Jack Williams, who previously penned thrillers The Missing and One of Us.

Harry and Jack created and wrote the series, which has now been picked up by BBC, HBO and Stan for audiences in the UK and Ireland, the United States, and Australia respectively.

The Tourist boasts an absolutely stellar cast, with Jamie Dornan boasting the lead role of The Man, who wakes up after an accident with amnesia and has to rediscover who he is.

Line of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin gets tied into the thriller as a waitress named Luci, who develops a particular bond with Jamie’s character.

Danielle McDonald of Dumplin’ and Bird Box fame plays Helen Chambers, a fledgling Probationary Constable doing her own research on the unfolding mystery.

Hugo Weaving, star of The Avengers and The Matrix, finishes up the cast as Agent Lachlan Rogers, a prominent and respective detective inspector who leads Major Crime for the Australian state police.

The Tourist airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on New Year’s Day.
