***Warning: The Undoing finale spoilers ahead***

Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman’s drama The Undoing came to its nail-biting conclusion this weekend, with the murderer of Elena Alves finally revealed.

As Jonathan and wife Grace’s life continued to unravel at a rapid pace, the truth finally came out as the court case waited for the verdict.

Turns out, Jonathan was the killer after all.

Not only that, in scenes that never made it to air, there was a particularly stomach-churning moment that really explained how depraved he was.

Speaking to TVLine, Hugh said: ‘I don’t know what’s in the final cut, but I was doing some takes where Jonathan — while hammering away at [her head] — was spitting out a part of her brain.

‘I don’t know if that’s still in there.’

While that part of the scene did make it into the final edit, Hugh then teased: ‘This is much worse, but after her head was [beaten into] pulp I [did a take] where Jonathan the doctor was quite interested in her brains, and he started poking around in them with his finger.’

Grim.

British actor Hugh admitted that he relished in the opportunity to play the sadistic killer, who was so convincing that he was innocent that, at one point, the attention was turned to his teenage son, Henry (Noah Jupe).

‘I think there are sociopaths, psychopaths, narcissists like that [in real-life]. I’ve met them,’ he said. ‘They are incredibly convincing. So that was fun to play.

‘It was also essential to play, because if he’s not convincing in those moments you have no show. The whodunit mystery goes out the window.’

Well, it certainly worked like a charm – and when the series finally launched over in the UK, it beat Game Of Thrones in the ratings.

Not too shabby.

The Undoing is available now on NOW TV and Sky Atlantic.
