The Walking Dead: A comedy spin-off is currently in development, showrunner announces during holiday special

Could we be looking at a Shaun of the Dead-style comedic spin-off of The Walking Dead?

Ever since the first season of The Walking Dead was released 10 years ago, the post-apocalyptic series has struck fear into the hearts of its viewers.

But while the series is due to come to an end in 2022, following the launch of its eleventh season next year, the world of The Walking Dead may soon be sparking laughter among its audience, rather than terror.

While speaking during the recent The Walking Dead Holiday Special, executive producer Scott M. Gimple announced a new unexpected spin-off project.

‘We are working on a straight Walking Dead comedy right now,’ Scott said, via

The showrunner added: ‘We’re not making fun of our world, but it’s just more of a comedic take on the world.’

While we’re slightly dubious about how a Walking Dead comedy will work… we are definitely intrigued!

Earlier this month, Walking Dead showrunner Angela King shared a picture on Instagram from set ahead of the return of season 10 in February.

In the picture, a member of the Commonwealth Army can be seen dressed in their white armoured uniform standing next to a cargo container.

‘You ready to see what they’ve been up to?’ she wrote in the caption.

Numerous Walking Dead fans expressed their excitement over the sneak peek at the upcoming episodes.

‘Yesssssss,’ one person responded, while another commented: ‘I’m always ready for The Walking Dead.’

Production on The Walking Dead was disrupted this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While the season 10 finale was originally supposed to be released in April this year, the transmission date was delayed to October.

Another six episodes were also added to the season, due to be released in the new year.

The Walking Dead returns Sunday 28 February on AMC.
