The Walking Dead got everyone talking with the latest episode as Daryl Dixon has a surprising new love interest – and fans have been left scratching their heads.
During the latest edition, the show dropped a big bombshell in a flashback story revealing the mysterious Leah (Lynn Collins) as a former flame of Norman Reedus’ character.
In a series of flashback scenes set five years prior to the episode’s present day, Daryl encounters Leah after a mysterious dog leads him to a cabin.
They get off on the wrong foot – she doesn’t take too kindly to a stranger trespassing on her territory – but they eventually go onto spark a romance.
However, despite their close connection, one day Daryl returns to the cabin to find that Leah has vanished, leaving a note that reads: ‘Find Me.’
Fans have been left baffled by the revelation, which seemingly came out of nowhere with the character’s relationship first revealed with just one full season remaining.
One fan wrote: ”The relationship between Daryl and Leah fell flat for me… [Daryl] has shown more emotion in his platonic relationships with his family than he showed with Leah…
‘He returned to find her gone and didn’t even shed a tear or look distraught at all. The whole thing was just… weird and left more questions than answers about Daryl as a character.’
Another said: ”I would be fine with this storyline if it was actually a common theme throughout season 9 & 10. if things were hinted/daryl mentioning her/just any form of dialogue about them two, then this “leah reveal” would be really exciting… almost like “YES FINALLY WHO IS SHE?!”
‘The fact that there has been no mention of her in two whole seasons (almost 2 years in the shows timeline), just makes it look like this episode was thrown together, just to fill in some gaps – even if it wasn’t. (sic)’
A different viewer ranted: ‘I tried to give it a fair chance but for the life of me I cannot get into Leah and Daryl. All of their scenes just felt mad awkward.’
Some fans were more positive, though – and are intrigued about where the storyline could go in the future.
One Twitter user wrote: ‘Sorry to all other shippers but… “DEAH”!!! DARYL + LEAH (sic)’
Another added: ‘I liked Leah & Daryl. It showed he’s capable of an adult, emotional and physical relationship we had not seen before. I think it was necessary to show it’s there, and possible. Everything he’s been thru makes him who he is – now. (sic)’
Meanwhile, Lynn herself has weighed in on her role and the introduction of her character.
Speaking as a huge fan of The Walking Dead, she told Cinemablend: ‘This was such a great opportunity. I am a big fan of this show. And actually, as a fan, it’s an honour.
‘It’s an absolute honour to be a part of it, and in this way, where we’re introducing something I think that we’ve all wanted, for Daryl to have a love interest.
‘I feel like this is a time that the writers felt like they could introduce it. You know, the show’s winding down its last few seasons, and what a way to be involved in something that I’ve loved.’
