Warning: spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead season 11 episode 1.
The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan has revealed that he ‘fought’ against Negan saying a heartbreaking line about Glenn in the show’s season 11 premiere on Star on Disney Plus that left fans in shock.
In the first episode of the new season, Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Negan (Jeffrey), Daryl (Norman Reedus) and other members of their group embark on a mission to retrieve supplies for their community.
Negan, who brutally killed Maggie’s husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) in season seven, tells the group that he believes Maggie has brought him on the mission just so she can kill him in revenge.
The iconic villain, who’s had a redemptive arc on the show, decides to test Maggie’s hate for him, telling her: ‘I am not gonna let you drag me through the mud, filth and slime to put me down like a dog… like Glenn was.’
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jeffrey recalled reading that line in the script for the very first time, explaining that he ‘tried to nix the line completely’.

‘I fought it! That’s the one line that I immediately called [showrunner Angela Kang] and I was like, “I can’t say it. I can’t f**king bring up Glenn’s name here.” And I was like, “Any goodwill that Negan has gotten on his side is going to go out the window the minute I say Glenn.”’
Jeffrey added that he didn’t think it was ‘necessary’ to include the line, but realised when watching the cut that it was effective in the scene.

‘I tried to nix the line completely. I didn’t think it was necessary. And I thought, for sure, they would let me change it. And so I filmed it three or four different ways,’ he said.
‘I tried everything else. I said, “Your husband” and other stuff. but ultimately it was like, “Well, let’s just try the f**king Glenn line.” And then, of course, when I saw the cut, I was like, “Oh, f**kers!” [Laughs] They had to put it in.’
Episode one of The Walking Dead’s final season ended on a gripping cliffhanger, as Maggie hangs onto the roof of the train for dear life, calling for Negan to help her up.
In a moment reminiscent of The Lion King, Negan leaves Maggie to fall to her apparent death, as walkers waited for her below.
Fans are desperate to find out what happened to Maggie and if she somehow managed to make it out of the seemingly-impossible situation alive.
As for Negan, will anyone find out that he left Maggie to die?
The Walking Dead is available to watch on Star on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Mondays.
