The Walking Dead cast has reunited over a video call for a tense table read, seeing Lauren Cohan’s Maggie finally come face-to-face with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan after making her grand return to the series.
The much-loved character fled Hilltop with the mysterious Georgie (Jayne Atkinson) partway through season nine, when Negan was being kept as a prisoner in the Alexandrian jail for murdering Maggie’s husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) with a baseball bat.
And now, in an episode titled Home Sweet Home which will air some time next year, the pair have come full-circle, and Maggie doesn’t like the fact that Negan is no longer being held captive.
‘You’re out,’ she quips in an exclusive clip issued to Entertainment Weekly.
Negan explain: ‘I didn’t escape, if that’s what you’re thinking.’
But before he can go on any further, Carol (Melissa McBride) cuts in to give Maggie the low down on what has happened in her absence.
She says: ‘There’s one other thing you should know. Negan was with the Whisperers that night. I wanted you to hear it from me, because…’
Maggie guesses it was Carol who freed the show’s villain seeing her defend the decision: ‘We were going to lose everything. Negan is the reason we didn’t.’
Daryl (Norman Reedus) tells Maggie that nothing has been decided with Negan as he urged her to come home.
But she’s not sure, as she says: ‘The truth is, I left home because I didn’t want Negan taking up any more space in my head and I realised I wasn’t ready to bring Hershel back to that.
‘And the next morning we found Elijah and a whole community that needed us as much as we needed them. And it felt like it was meant to be.’
‘And what Carol did?’ Daryl questions.
‘What she felt like she needed to do. I get it. God only knows what I would have done if I was there,’ Maggie sighs. ‘But I wasn’t.’
Maggie made her return in the recent season 10 finale where she changed the discourse of the comic books by saving Seth Gilliam’s Gabriel.
She was joined by a masked man, who fans are desperate to know more about. Could he be the newcomer Elijah?
We guess we’ll find out next year as the show is set to return with a six-episode anthology series before launching into an extended season 11.
The Walking Dead airs on AMC and NOW TV.
