The Witcher season 2: Kim Bodnia opens up on father-son relationship with Henry Cavill

The Witcher star Kim Bodnia has opened up on how he forged a father-son relationship with Henry Cavill while filming season 2, explaining how they bonded over their shared passion for nature.

The new episodes of the fantasy Netflix series, which are due to come out later this month, will follow Geralt of Rivia (Henry) as he takes Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) to Kaer Morhen, where he grew up and was trained to become a monster hunter.

While there, he is reunited with several faces from his past, including his comrades who went down the same path as him and Vesemir (Kim), an older, experienced witcher who raised them as children.

At the world premiere of season two in London, Killing Eve star Kim spoke to Metro.co.uk about taking on the role, revealing that he was encouraged to do so by the Superman actor, who is a fan of the video games.

The Danish actor stated that ‘the way Henry is fighting for this storytelling is coming through to Netflix’, adding that it shows ‘how humanity is connected to nature’.

Kim said that he felt ‘proud’ to be a part of the story, outlining how he ‘lives in nature’ and is ‘always training senses and feelings’.

‘When I was brought in to play his father figure, I was happy to tell you that the talk we had about this, how important the knowledge about nature and humanity, and that we are nature, we are not separated from it, that was all,’ he said.

‘That gave us the connection that I need and the trust that he said to me, because he is a big fan of The Witcher games, and he said to me: “You are Vesemir.” And that was the greatest beginning. Then we started going into the deep, deep feelings and talks.’

Kim described Henry as a ‘lovely person that opens up his mind and wants to create his personality through that together with people that he trusts’.

‘I was so happy I’m one of them. And that energy, of course we used on set, of course,’ he added.

In Killing Eve, Kim played the role of Konstantin Vasiliev, a handler for assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer).

In 2019, he received a British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.

He gained international renown for his talented portrayal of drug dealer Frank in the 1996 film Pusher.

The Witcher season 2 is due to launch on December 17 on Netflix.
