This Is Us has tackled the coronavirus pandemic in season five’s premiere.
Keeping to current events, the show took 2020 into its hands and discussed the fallout from the killing of George Floyd as well as the Black Lives Matter protests.
Last week, the creator Dan Fogelman said it would have ‘felt almost irresponsible’ not to include the coronavirus as well as other world events.
The premier had Randall – played by Sterling K Brown – deal with Covid-19 as well as the emotional trauma of Floyd’s death.
‘I’m not falling apart. I’m not having a breakdown. I’m just really, really sad,’ the character told his wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson).
‘The pain is not forever,’ his wife replied.
Although the premiere was last night, it won’t be until November 10 that fans will get to see the next episode.
NBC will instead be airing its usual Election Day coverage.
Sterling revealed a few months ago what’s to come for his character Randall and Kevin (played by Justin Hartley).
Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees all-day event, he teased: ‘The relationship has been complicated from the beginning.
‘They will continue like a yo-yo — will come apart and together, apart and together. I think by the time we reach that point in the future, there are other things on their minds that they are able to focus on to put aside whatever differences they have.
‘But for the next two or however many seasons we’re around, I think you’ll continue to see these brothers fray and then resolve, fray and resolve.’
This Is Us next airs on November 10 on NBC in the US.
