A doctor has told how she hopes that Vitamin D will help the vulnerable and elderly to fight Covid-19.

Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on Monday’s This Morning, Dr Sara Kayat discussed the health benefits of Vitamin D, as well as the recent reports that it could help the elderly to fight the virus.

‘Vitamin D is not only brilliant for our bones and joints but it is also being claimed to help with our immune system and optimise our immune system,’ she told the hosts.

‘The government is looking into various studies which have suggested those with lower Vitamin D levels have a higher risk of dying as a result of Covid, therefore the opposite is likely to be true.

‘They have commissioned more trials into this further, as back in June NICE (National Insititute of Clinical Health and Excellence) suggested that there wasn’t enough evidence to make that link.’

‘But with more trials coming up, hopefully, that will show that there is that link and it’s an easy and simple medication to take.’

It comes after it was reported that millions of vulnerable people will be sent Vitamin D supplies from the government.

Elderly people who are shielding will be sent enough Vitamin D to last four months, with the first packages to arrive early next month.

One recent study found low levels of the ‘sunshine vitamin’ have been recorded in a large number of people who tested positive for coronavirus.

Vitamin D, a hormone processed in the kidneys, is known to help the immune system fight off infections such as colds and flu.

Supplements could help Covid-19 patients maintain healthy muscles and bones while boosting their immune system.

The move also comes after Health Secretary Matt Hancock decided that the government needed to act quickly due to the evidence about the benefits of Vitamin D.

Ministers are hoping that that vitamin, along with a vaccine, will help to remove the need for an endless series of rolling lockdowns.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
